When most students start to learn music, they first know the scale and then what chords are in the scale. Today we think about it: If you know the chord first, how to think about which scales the chord can match.

The video is the seventh lesson of Cai Jian Jazz Guitar Advanced Class.

The three sets of scale systems we use commonly have natural major, harmony minor and melody minor. First we need to know the smooth chords and corresponding scales of the three sets of scale systems. Each set has 7 corresponding scales. Then, the three sets of scales correspond to a total of 21 tone scales. After knowing these, we can start from the chords to see which scales each chord can match, which is very easy.

Major scale

The figure below is the seven sequential chords in C major, and the second line is the scale corresponding to each chord. You can also understand these seven scales as the scale of C major, except that the tones of the scales are different.

For example, someone asked what scale Dm7 can use, you can of course say Dorain playing D. But you said that there is nothing wrong with playing the C major scale. These two ways of thinking are just different starting points. It doesn’t matter if you start to bounce from the main chord in the case of chords. It is only convenient for you to start with the main vocal. There is no practical meaning from what sound in the actual performance.

Ionian, Dorain, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeonian in the seven scales above should be familiar.

The most unfamiliar in the first set of scales is the Phrygian, which is the scale of the 3rd level. If the students have played the metal, they should be familiar with this scale. Because many of the phrases in the metal style use Phrygian, the last B Locrian is generally used less.

As I said above, you can also understand these seven scales as the scale of C major, but the main sounds are different, because the seven scales contain the same sound.

There are also a lot of modern music. He will use the 4th chord as the main chord, so it is a Lydian, which is a very special sound because there is a #4 inside.

Now that we see a chord, we have to think about what scale it can use, that is, each chord corresponds to a scale starting from its root.

For example, if a song uses Dm7 as the main chord, then the scale can choose D’s Dorian; if my song is based on Em7 as the main chord, then I will choose E’s Phrygian, and so on.

Harmony minor

The following figure shows the seven chords of the A and the minor minors and the scales corresponding to the chords.

The first-order chord is AmM7, because the fixed tone of the A and the minor minor scale is ABCDEFG#, and the first-order chord composed of the A and the acoustic minor is ACEG#, which is the root of the chord, the minor third, the fifth, and the big seven. The melody, level 1 chord is AmM7.

By analogy, the 2nd chord is Bm7b5; the 3rd chord is Cmaj7#5; the 4th chord is Dm7; the 5th chord is E7; the 6th chord is Fmaj7; and the 7th chord G#dim7.

Let’s take a look at each scale. The first chord AmM7 chord corresponds to the chord minor of A; the second chord Bm7b5 chord corresponds to the scale of B Locrian #6, because B becomes the lead at this time. That is, considering B in BCDEFG# A as 1, it becomes 1 b2 b3 4 b5 6 b7.

This is equivalent to raising the b6 in Locrain by a semitone, so this scale is called Locrian#6. In fact, you can also understand it as A’s harmony minor is no problem (the latter example is the same); the third chord is Cmaj7#5, which corresponds to the scale of Ionian#5, which is in the major scale. Play a #5 tone;

The fourth chord Dm7 corresponds to Dorian #4, which sounds much like the color of the minus chord; the fifth chord E7, which corresponds to Phrygian major, can also be called Big Frigia, or Phrygian #3.

Many people also call it the Arabic scale, because it sounds very Middle Eastern, this scale is also the favorite of matal metal lovers; the sixth chord Fmaj7 corresponds to the scale is Lydian #2; the seventh chord G#dim7 Its scale is G#’s super Locrianb7.

Melody minor

The following figure is the scale of the seven chords and chords corresponding to the melody minor

The first chord AmM7 corresponds to A’s melody minor; the second chord Bm7 corresponds to the scale of Dorian b2, which is to lower the Dorain’s 2-tone semitone, and its sound is the same as the lower second melody minor;

The third chord Cmaj7# corresponds to the scale of Lydian#5, which is to raise the Lydian’s 5-tone by a semitone. You can also think of it as the lower third-degree A-melody minor or you can play A jazz minor; the fourth The chord D7, the scale called Lydian b7 can also be called Mixo Lydian #4.

Do you still remember that I said that the 7th chord can play the pure five-degree melody minor above it? We now count from D, the top five of D is A sound, then you start singing from A sound 6 7 1 2 3 #4 #5 6 Just a melody minor of A.

So the 7th chord can play the pure five-degree melody minor above it. The following chords can be deduced. The sixth chord E7 corresponds to the scale of the MixoLydian b6, which can also be regarded as the upper four-degree melody minor. ;

The sixth chord is F#m7b5 corresponding to Aeonian b5, which can also be regarded as the minor three-degree melody minor; the seventh chord is G#m7b5 to see its scale Super Lociran also called Altered Scale.

We are already familiar with this scale, playing a small second-degree melody on the chord in the 7 chord, the two scales are the same.

What scales can a chord match?

In fact, the idea is very simple. First, we need to know what the chords of the various scales are. When we see a chord, we should consider the chords that may be a major, a melody, and a minor chord. When you improvise, a chord can be selected in a variety of scales!
